METRO case study: logistics automation with Relog TMS

Global players improve
their logistics with Relog

METRO shared how digitalizing its logistics with Relog helps the company grow without increasing operating costs.

METRO Cash & Carry is part of the global METRO AG group and operates in 10 cities across Kazakhstan. The company ships around 100 tons of goods every day. To eliminate manual work, the company decided to automate its logistics.

Before Implementing Relog

Before implementing logistics automation, METRO Cash & Carry operators filled out route sheets manually using an online map. Errors occurred, and drivers sometimes failed to deliver orders on time. To optimize their work and eliminate manual processes, the company decided to automate its logistics.

The company began exploring suitable software solutions, but none of them met its needs due to inconvenient interfaces. The search for a delivery automation solution continued until METRO Cash & Carry chose Relog.

“

Before implementing Relog, we had some difficulties — first of all, our operators had to build routes manually using an online map. Sometimes we failed to deliver an order on time. So we were looking for a solution, a way out of this situation.

Implementation Process

During the implementation process, it became clear that Relog required some customization. The issue was that the route planning algorithm did not fit METRO Cash & Carry’s needs. The system suggested loading 6–8 vehicles simultaneously at 9:00 a.m., which was not possible due to the warehouse’s capacity. The Relog team therefore customized the algorithms to match the customer’s operational capabilities.

The company also decided to integrate Relog with its corporate MSHOP website for receiving customer orders. However, the integration required significant investment from both sides, so the teams decided to use file export and import between MSHOP and Relog instead. This process can now be completed in just a few clicks. Relog now automatically builds routes based on predefined logistics parameters, including vehicle capacity, product characteristics, and customers’ delivery time requirements.

“

We highly value the efficiency and flexibility of the software. We especially appreciate that the developers are constantly improving Relog’s capabilities rather than resting on their achievements, taking into account the needs of customers and the market.

Results of Relog Implementation

As a result of implementing Relog, the service level increased to 95%. Customers now receive SMS notifications when the driver has departed and when they have arrived. They can also track the location of the vehicle carrying their order, as Relog allows drivers’ routes to be tracked via smartphone.

Thanks to the product’s comprehensive analytics, managers can monitor the timeliness and quality of deliveries. This enables them to collect customer feedback, respond to it, and continuously improve the service.

Operators now process orders much faster, and route planning has become easier. Drivers’ work has also improved, as the Relog app has simplified their daily tasks. With orders now distributed efficiently and routes planned correctly, METRO Cash & Carry can deliver goods to a much larger number of customers.

Thanks to logistics automation, the number of orders handled by METRO Cash & Carry increased by 30%, while delivery costs remained unchanged. This means the company was able to reduce its operating costs.
